LOS ANGELES TALL BUILDINGS STRUCTURAL DESIGN COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING, Los Angeles, CA, May 2007 MODELING ISSUES FOR TALL REINFORCED CONCRETE CORE WALL BUILDINGS

چکیده

Reinforced concrete walls are commonly used as the primary lateral-force-resistingsystem for tall buildings. As the tools for conducting nonlinear response history analysis have improved and with the advent of performance-based seismic design, reinforced concrete walls and core walls are often employed as the only lateral-force-resisting-system. Proper modeling of the load versus deformation behavior of reinforced concrete walls is essential to accurately predict important response quantities. Given this critical need, an overview of modeling approaches appropriate to capture the lateral load responses of both slender and stout reinforced concrete walls is presented. Modeling of both flexural and shear responses is addressed, as well as the potential impact of coupled flexure-shear behavior. Model results are compared with experimental results to assess the ability of common modeling approaches to accurately predict both global and local experimental responses. Based on the findings, specific recommendations are made for general modeling issues, limiting material strains for combined bending and axial load, and shear backbone relations.

Design of Tall Buildings – Preliminary Design

The design of tall buildings essentially involves a conceptual design, approximate analysis, preliminary design and optimization, to safely carry gravity and lateral loads. The design criteria are, strength, serviceability, stability and human comfort. The strength is satisfied by limit stresses, while serviceability is satisfied by drift limits in the range of H/500 to H/1000. Stability is sat...

Employing Nonlinear Response History Analysis of ASCE 7-16 on a Benchmark Tall Building

ASCE 7-16 has provided a comprehensive platform for the performance-based design of tall buildings. The core of the procedure is based on nonlinear response history analysis of the structure subjected to recorded or simulated ground motions. This study investigates consistency in the ASCE 7-16 requirements regarding the use of different types of ground motions. For this purpose performance of a...

Case Studies of Damage to Tall Steel Moment-Frame Buildings in Southern California during Large San Andreas Earthquakes

On 9 January 1857, a large earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred on the San Andreas fault, with rupture initiating at Parkfield in central California and propagating in a southeasterly direction over a distance of more than 360 km. Such a unilateral rupture produces significant directivity toward the San Fernando and Los Angeles basins. Indeed, newspaper reports of sloshing observed in the Los A...

OPTIMUM DESIGN OF TMD SYSTEM FOR TALL BUILDINGS

High tall buildings are more susceptible to dynamic excitations such as wind and seismic excitations. In this paper, design procedure and some current applications of tuned mass damper (TMD) were studied. TMD was proposed to study response of 20 storey height building to seismic excitations using time history analysis with and without the TMD. The study indicates that the response of structur...
